Inscribed tablet with an honorary decree of the Eleians for the Olympic victor Demokrates from the island of Tenedos written in the Eleian dialect. The athlete was winner in the men’s wrestling contest at the Olympic Games. The council of the Eleians honoured him with many privileges, declaring him public friend and benefactor with rights of exemption of taxes and tariffs, of holding land in Elis and with the privilege of the front seats in theater, public assembly and at games. Above the inscription are represented the emblems of the Tenedians, i.e. a bunch of grapes between two axes. According to the text, the decree should be written on a bronze plaque which would be dedicated in the temple of Zeus and sent to the victor’s compatriots. Found at the Sanctuary of Olympia.
